The goal of the CHAIRS study is to understand the impacts of oil refining on the environment and community health. With the increasing use of alternative transportation fuels and electric vehicles, the oil industry is undergoing transformation. Some oil refineries are closing or transitioning to produce biofuels. CHAIRS seeks to understand the environmental health implications of refinery retirements and retrofits to assist communities and policymakers in undertaking measures to support a just transition from fossil fuels to more sustainable alternatives.
